The members of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), popularly called Shiites on Monday staged a violent protest in Abuja where the sect members’ allegedly shot and killed a Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of Operation at FCT.
Reliable sources disclosed that DCP Umar was killed by the protesters while trying to prevent the violent action of destruction of property when the sect besieged the busy Federal Secretariat and Three Arms Zone. Three other police officers injured in the fracas are said to be in critical conditions.
Following this ugly develoipment, security was tightened at the Force headquarters to forestall any reprisal attacks over the arrest of scores of the protesting sect members.
The Shiite have remained resolute in their protests to demand the release of their spiritual leader, Sheik Ibraheem El Zakzakky, who has been in detention since 2015 despite court order to release him.
Meanwhile the Emergency Response and Ambulance Bays (ERABs) of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) located on Ahmadu Bello Way beside the Federal Secretariat was also attacked on a Monday with two vehicles burnt down.
The Shi’ites carried out the attack according a statement issued on Monday by Sani Datti, Head of Media and Public Relations of NEMA.
The two burnt vehicles were the Mobile Intensive Care Unit (MICU), which is a life support ambulance and a multi-purpose Response Intervention Van (Rescue Tender), ttyhe statement said.
The ERABs was situated at the location for timely response to emergencies and disasters to reduce loss of lives and property.
Director General of NEMA Engr Mustapha Maihaja has visited the response bay and inspected the damage, the statement added.
