This bizarre fish with human-like teeth has become an online sensation after being caught in Malaysia.

The startling catch was reportedly made in Malaysia and images of the small fish have been widely shared on social media, receiving over 8,000 retweets and 14,000 likes on Twitter.

People were quick to speculate as to what the fish actually was but local media newspaper The Rakyat Post has identified it as a triggerfish which is common in the waters around Malaysia.

Triggerfish are made up of around 40 species and are often brightly coloured, living in tropical and subtropical waters.ADVERTnull

Males are known to be territorial and aggressive, charging at intruders and even using their teeth to battle with crabs and sea urchins, according to National Geographic.

While another joked on Twitter: “Kylie Jenner is shaking in her boots,” and a third said: “It has long been known that there are already alien creatures amongst us. Not necessarily as we know it.”

According to National Geographic, the species can grow to be around 3.3ft – with the largest being the ‘stone triggerfish’ which is typically found in the Eastern Pacific from Mexico to Chile.

The publication also says that triggerfish are ‘attractive animals’ – everyone’s ideas are different, I guess, but they have become too popular for their own good.

They are sought for the aquarium trade, which has prompted fishermen to gather even threatened species from the wild. Researchers are working to raise triggerfish in captivity so that wild populations might more likely be left alone.

Maleah Burrows, 31, came across the lifeless body of a fish in the sand. But she became immediately shocked as a closer inspection showed that the animal had ‘human teeth’.

Talking about the bizarre discovery, she said: “We were just walking along the beach and it was washed up far from the shoreline and caught our attention.

“I originally just thought it was a plain old fish – nothing exciting, but I still wanted to show my three-year-old.

“Then as we got closer I saw all the teeth and I was shocked because I’d never seen anything like it!”

That’s enough toothy fish for one day, thank you.
