Dear 9jahot1bite,

Following a directive by the Nigerian Communications Communication (NCC), existing SIM card subscribers have been mandated to update their SIM registration details with their National Identification Number (NIN).

The deadline which was initially scheduled for Dec. 30th, 2020 has now been extended to Jan. 19th, 2021 for subscribers with NIN, and a six weeks’ extension from Dec 30th, 2020 to Feb. 9th, 2021 for subscribers without NIN. More so, USSD and verification charges have been cancelled across the country.

Failure to comply with this directive will result to deactivation of subscribers by the telecommunications operators.

Below are few steps to link your phone number with your NIN to avoid having your SIM card deactivated.

It is used to match your biometric data and other details in the National Identity Database during verification and authentication.

Q: Please what is so special about this NIN number?

A: The NIN is used to tie all records about an individual into the National Identity Database and is also used as a valid means of establishing or verifying individual identity

Q. How do I register for NIN?

A. You can register in any NIMC ECRs (Enrollment Centres) close to you. Kindly visit for a list of all enrollment centers nationwide.

A. You can check your NIN Slip, it has your 11 Digit Number at the top left corner, on the second row. You can also dial *346# and press 1, please note that you may be charged 20 naira.

Q: I can see my NIN on my phone after dialing *346#, will my line still be blocked ?

A. All Customers are obligated to submit their NIN to their service provider; once the NIN you have submitted has been verified successfully with NIMC, your verified NIN will be linked with your SIM registration.

According to the NCC directive, lines not linked with their NIN before 19th January 2021, will be blocked.
